Millefiori was first crafted in Venice in the 15th century. Each bead was handmade under a flame, using glass rods to produce a colourful mosaic pattern. Coloured rods like candy rock are cut into thin slices while the glass is hot, then pressed to form a bead. Today, the technique is applied to polymer clays which are pliable and don't need heat to fuse.
